Summary

The International Biological Program (IBP) was a major collaborative program initiated in 1964 to study the biosphere.

Details

The IBP was first suggested in 1959 and put into place in 1964. It was sponsored by the International Council of Scientific Unions, the International Union of Biological Scientists and UNESCO, and the project was taken up by learned societies around the world. The IBP was divided into seven major projects or sections depending on the field of study, the most relevant to NCIG being the Human Adaptability (HA) section. Within Australia, the IBP was organized by the Australian Academy of Science and was headed by Sir Otto Frankel FRS, FAA (formerly chief and later Senior Research Fellow of CSIRO Plant Industry). The IBP's activities in Australia were not officially launched in Canberra until November 1967. Both Sir MacFarlane Burnett, the then President of the Australian Academy of Science, and Sir Otto Frankel, presided over the launch.
