Summary

Melville Island lies in the eastern Timor Sea off the coast of the Northern Territory. Melville Island and Bathurst Island are known as the Tiwi Islands and at 5,785 square km, Melville Island is the second biggest island in Australia. It has a population of approximately 800 people. Almost 90% of the people living in the Tiwi Islands are of Aboriginal descent and they have occupied the Tiwi islands for around 7000 years.
