Place Delissaville

Northern Territory

Summary

Prior to 1975, the small Indigenous community of Belyuen was officially known as Delissaville. The Belyuen community is located 128 km by road from Darwin in the Northern Territory and belongs to the traditional country of the Larrakiya. The Cox Peninsula, on which Belyuen stands was handed back to the traditional owners in the year 2000 when the Northern Land Council won the longest running land rights case in Australian history. The Indigenous people of Belyuen (formerly Delissaville) are the Wadjiginy, the Emmiyangal and the Mendheyangal and they speak Batjamalh, Emmi and Mendhe respectively.
