Place Maningrida

Northern Territory

Summary

Maningrida is one of the largest Aboriginal towns in the Northern Territory. It is located 500 km east of Darwin and 300 km north east of Jabiru and sits on the North Central Arnhem Land coast where the Liverpool River meets the Arafura sea. The population of the Maningrida township was 2,300 in 2011 but more people live on the 30 outstations around Maningrida. Maningrida was first set up in the late 1940s as a trading post to stop the drift of Aboriginal people from their homelands into Darwin. It was hoped that they could become self sufficient and not have to rely on welfare. From 1957 onwards, it became a permanent Welfare Department settlement. The Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1976 meant that Aboriginal people in the Maningrida region were granted inalienable freehold title to their lands under Federal law. The traditional landowners of this country are the Kunibidji people. There are up to 16 languages and dialects spoken in the Maningrida area and most people in Maningrida speak two or three languages. These days Maningrida services the region with a school, health clinic, food outlets, supermarkets, service station, arts centre and airport. The West Arnhem Regional Council also provides a range of important services.
