Place Victoria River Downs

Northern Territory

Summary

Victoria River Downs or Victoria River Downs Station is located in the Northern Territory, Australia. Previously it was the world's largest pastoral property with an area of 41,000 square km but now covers only 8,900 square km. It has been operating for over 100 years as a cattle property. It is thought that within the first 50 years of the arrival of Europeans more than 85% of Aboriginal people living on Victoria River Downs died or were killed. Eventually such cattle stations used the Aboriginal people as labour, mostly unpaid.
