Place Doomadgee

Queensland

Summary

Doomadgee community is located on the Nicholson River, 1147 km west of Townsville in Queensland and only 140 km from the Northern Territory border. It was originally established on the coast as an Aboriginal mission in 1931 by the Christian Brethren but had to be moved inland in 1936 after a cyclone. The Christian Brethren insisted on a strict regime where the main amusement was hymn singing; and this continued in the 1970s. The last of the mission workers moved out in 1988 after a smooth transition of power to the Aboriginal council. Since 2007, the Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council has had full shire status, and eight Queensland government departments are represented in Doomadgee. The community is made up of the Waanyi and Gangalidda peoples, and has a strong and vibrant culture. Doomadgee has a guest house, hospital, post office, shop and roadhouse. According to the 2011 census, Doomadgee has a population of 1258.
