Place Angurugu
Northern Territory
Summary
The Angurugu community is located on the western coast of Groote Eylandt which is around 650 km east of Darwin and 50 km off the Arnhem Land coast in the Gulf of Carpentaria. In 2011, the population of Angurugu and its surrounds was 835 of whom 95% were Indigenous. The Indigenous people of Angurugu speak Anindilyakwa and Yolngu Matha. The Anindilyakwa-speaking clans are the traditional owners of Angurugu and the rest of Groote Eylandt. The Groote Eylandt clans used to meet at Angurugu for ceremonies. The Anglican Church set up Angurugu as a missionary station in 1943 and by the 1950s, most of the clans living on the west side of the island had settled at Angurugu. In 2008, Angurugu became part of the East Arnhem Shire and since then the East Arnhem Shire Council has provided local government in Angurugu. For more Reference: www.eastarnhem.nt.gov.au/angurugu/
