Summary
Bob Kirk was the person responsible for collecting most of NCIG's biological samples and related documents. He began the collection in the late 1950s when he was at the Zoology Department at the University of Western Australia and continued when he joined the Human Biology Department at the John Curtin School of Medical Research, ANU in 1967 until his retirement in 1986.
Details
Bob Kirk was born in the West Midlands of England. He studied chemistry at university and was interested in progressive politics. In 1939, he registered as a conscientious objector and was invited by the brilliant and radical biologist Lancelot Hogben to complete graduate studies at Birmingham University. He married Mildred who had an honours degree in Zoology and in 1947, they moved to New York for Kirk's first job, teaching physiology at an exclusive girls' school. They found the racial politics in the U.S. disturbing and did not like the discrimination against African-Americans, including his own students.
When a position came up in the Zoology Department at the University of Western Australia, they happily accepted.
It was there that Kirk developed an interest in studying genetic diversity in human populations, in particular, Indigenous populations of Australia and Papua New Guinea. For the next ten years he collected and analysed blood samples from Aboriginal people in the Kimberley and the Western Desert.
In 1964, he was sought out to lead a major study of human adaptation among Australian Aborigines, as part of the International Biological Program (IBP). Kirk was appointed the national convenor of the IBP-Human Adaptability (HA) 1 Australian study that was the Aboriginal arm of the Australian contribution, and he was on the Australian Academy of Science subcommittee for the IBP HA . In 1967, the Kirks moved to Canberra where Bob took up a position as head of the Human Biology Department at the John Curtin School of Medical Research and work for the IBP HA1 began in earnest. While much of the collection pertains to samples and documents associated with the IBP HA1, collecting still continued after 1973 when the IBP HA 1 came to an end.
In 1987, Bob Kirk retired from the John Curtin School and as custodian of the collection. NCIG is grateful to Bob Kirk for without him, the collection would not exist and this is in large part due to his meticulous nature and his great attention to detail which ensured that every letter and every document that passed through his hands at that time, has been kept.
